Our Country
During the time of the dreaming, long ago at a time far in the past the land was soft and impressionable. In Jurruru language the dreaming is known as ngura nyujankamu, which means the camp, the place, the country, everything is soft. During this time spiritual beings roamed the land creating physical features, rock engravings throughout the country and the Law which governs the way that Jurruru people live and relate to their country. These beings also created sign posts within the country that allow Jurruru people to read and navigate through their country.
One such story is that of the two goannas that fought and brought the witchetty grub down to the Ashburton River back in the time when the land was soft. After the two fought the injured goanna became Jurruru country and the other goanna became Kurrama country. When the injured lay down he also lay on top of the eel and witchetty grub who were also fighting, bringing peace to the land.
